A 1 to go see racing RAce DAy
Gentlemen… start your engines!
Continuing from the last post, Carrie, her dad and me attended the A1gp race day. Unlike the previous day, there were definitely more people around, including foreigners. Seems like Malaysians rarely seen really tall people, because there was this tall Englishman, which people kept staring at. For me it is just a usual sight. The parking wasn’t free this time, but luckily it was cheap. Just needed to pay RM5 per entry. It was a good thing to arrive early because at the end of it, the car park was absolutely full.
A1gp hasn’t got the attraction of the formula 1 series, firstly because majority of the people have not been introduced to it. It also has a slightly more confusing race format, unlike the straight forward qualifying and race in F1. A1 has a few qualifying sessions, a sprint race and the actual thing, though for newbie’s they might be confused with the sprint session and the actual race. The reason I mention this is the sprint race winner also gets a prize and celebrate like they just won the whole thing. The hype during the sprint race can also confuse people.
Unlike F1, A1 has countries competing against each other, and each car has the same engine. What makes them different are the drivers respectively and also the settings of the car. If I’m not mistaken, each car has a turbo boost that can be activated to a maximum of 9 times throughout a race. Each boost adds 10hp, though little, it makes all the difference.
So there we were at the international Sepang circuit once again. The same activities were still held since yesterday. A lot of blow-up kids thing, such as giant slides, a castle, and a train which has an ass that resembles… an ass. There was also a booth where kids were free to play some small R/C to race each other. Cheap things being used, all I saw was the cars hitting the wall most of the time. Also another bigger camp where the souvenirs were sold, and some other games. We tried the one which needs a steady hand to guide your metal thing, and if u hit the circuit it buzzed… oh what are they called again… nevermind. We also bought some ear plugs, which cost RM10 per pair. More hiked up prices, but it is sort off a need because the cars really pass by at ear splitting decibles.
for those who would like to watch the next A1, I suggest filling yourself before the event. There are very limited food choices there, and the prices are quite expensive. Also stay away from the fried rice… not enough rice, and a rock chicken. Rock chicken not as in a new type of cuisine, only that it is hard as a rock. In all honesty I actually would have like to eat Burger King but unfortunately everybody else had the same idea, which means the queue was long.
During the time we were there some cool events took place, like the race driver parade. They were each driven in a Lotus, some of the drivers sitting on the roof. Yeah these cars are convertibles, not the driver climb out on top of the roof. What else… some GT cars running about. When the race wanted to start there would be a tv helicopter that flew very low. Its something of a sight to me, I like flying machines, and to see this pilot fly the helicopter with such skills is really something.
When alas the real race was going to start, it rained. This was a great setup for some crashes which was something I would like to see. Other then one spin out that was the only ‘crash’ I saw. I must mention that it rained quite heavily during the warm up before the cars race so I was thinking whether the water entered the car and creating a bath tub for the drivers. Actual race time… it was not that exciting, it got boring after a while thanks to the lap board not working from the place we were sitting. Alex kept getting overtaken and you can see the crowd not being happy about it. In the end we decided to leave earlier to avoid the exiting crowd and maybe find something better to do.
It was a mixed bag of fun and boredom at the end of the day, but for sure it was tiring. I was the driver so I didn’t have any chance to have some shut eye. Good thing it was free… haha.
